Hooty’s Nest Egg is a Soaring Owls Foundation led and PTA supported capital campaign initiative dedicated to raise funds for capital improvements, International Baccalaureate (IB) program support, materials and training, and other supplemental enrichment programs. Hooty’s Nest Egg is meant to be separate from other PTA-led fundraising initiatives, like the fall fundraiser, fall festival and business partnerships – those initiatives fund the PTA’s operational budget and programs throughout the school year.
The Soaring Owls Foundation, Inc. (SOFi) is a non-profit 501(c) 3 Charitable Organization which was created to focus solely on raising capital funds to benefit Bolton Academy through programs identified by Bolton Academy’s Administration. Last year, the combined funds of the Hooty’s Nest Egg capital campaign and other funds raised through SOFi helped pay for IB teacher training; training and materials for Kendore Kingdom phonics and reading program; In house training for the school’s writing program; cultural events, a new sound system for the Auditorium; and other programs.
For the 2016-2017 school year, the Administration has identified programs that will likely cost an estimated $60,000 plus Capital Improvements costing an estimated $100,000. Realizing that this funding will exceed the historical annual fundraising of both Hooty’s Nest Egg and SOFi combined, the funds raised at SOFi’s Golf Tournament will help cover the costs of the following initiatives:
• The annual need for International Baccalaureate Programs and materials; • Supplemental Science and Robotics Instructional Support for Bolton Academy students; • Training and materials to expand the Kendore Kingdom Phonics/Reading program; • Upgrades to the Playground area including equipment and a new field.
While this amount may seem to be a lot of money to raise for supplemental programs for a Public School, it pales in comparison to most of the other elementary schools in the North Atlanta Cluster. These schools raise funds not only for the immediate school year but also for a Capital Reserve Account in an amount equal to or more than the year’s funding budget. Our Foundation, being only a few years old, is still working to establish that reserve account. That way, if fundraising in one year does not meet the budget, we have access to the Reserve Account to ensure the programs are funded (Reserve accounts at other schools range from $90,000 to $400,000). Having a reserve account gives the school administration assurance that it can plan on the continuity of funding for the additional curricula in future years.
